The Surfer's Journal has cast its support for the arts in a new giving venture.
The 21-year-old reader-supported publication has named nonprofit Loveart& (http://www.loveartand.org) as a recipient of its 1% for the Planet donation program. Established by Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard and Blue Ribbon Flies owner Craig Mathews, the 1% program challenges businesses to contribute 1% of their gross sales to environmentally conscious nonprofit organizations.
A participant of the 1% for the Planet program since 2010, Loveart& is a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring and empowering youth through art, environmental advocacy, and outdoor adventure. Both Loveart& and The Surfer’s Journal are based in Orange County, California where the donation will help provide creative programming for low income and under-served youth.
Co-founded by Jennifer Smucker and Shannon Lindsey Frugis, Loveart& provides young people with the opportunity to express themselves productively and explore their own creativity through free mobile workshops teaching DIY (do-it-yourself) skill-building activities. Workshops are based upon the artisan movement which promotes making things by hand while incorporating recycled and re-purposed materials. Traveling in their signature orange Loveart& Van, the duo brings the custom workshops to classrooms, community centers and after school programs where arts programming can be hard to come by.
With this donation, The Surfer’s Journal is supporting Loveart&’s commitment to broadening young people’s perspectives on the world and investing in the next generation of society. The nonprofit also works with corporate sponsor Cali Bamboo to develop school workshops on sustainability.
Founded in 1992 by Steve and Debbee Pezman, The Surfer's Journal is a bi-monthly, 132-page publication supported primarily by its readers. The so-called "half-book, half-magazine" covers all aspects of wave riding and surf culture and has also published several books on the subject. Learn more at http://www.surfersjournal.com.
