Two Men Arrested, One Carrying a Meat Cleaver

Posted:

SHERMAN, TX - Two men are in jail after police say they were getting ready to rob a gas station with a meat cleaver.  The men were approached by officers after detectives say they noticed the two men acting suspiciously near the Exceleron gas station in Sherman. The two men walked away after seeing the detectives, but were later found hiding in the woods. During a search officers say they found a large meat cleaver, pepper spray and several other illegal knives on the them.  Both men were arrested.  37-year-old Earnest Taylor was charged with possession of a prohibited weapon. 30-year-old William Woods was charged with failure to identify, illegally carrying a weapon, and possession of marijuana.

"This is something that, like I say, goes along with our mission statement about preventing and disrupting and reducing crime and disorder," said Sgt. D.M. Hampton, Sherman Police Department.  "And, it was one of those things that, right place right time, but it also probably kept the store from being burglarized or robbed."

Officers say Woods also had warrants out for theft in Sherman and in Fannin county.
