SHERMAN, TX -- The city Parks and Recreation Department kicked off a new event at the Municipal Building, as shoppers searched for unique gifts.

More than 400 people showed up to browse items from about 35 vendors at the first ever Holiday Bazaar, according to city parks officials.

One of the vendors was Whitewright resident Roger Clausen, who was offering birdhouses made from gourds for sale. He says he chooses the seeds and grows the gourds, while his wife does all the decorating.

"Different varieties will give you different shapes, like this will only give you a Maranka gourd when you take the seeds out and grow them, unless it gets cross pollinated," says Clausen.

Clausen says they also sell their birdhouses at events like the Arts Festival, and he thought attendance was good Saturday for a brand-new event.

Other items for sale at the bazaar included soap, DVD's, jewelry, and tupperware containers.
