GRAYSON COUNTY, TX -- A grass fire broke out near Whitesboro at an old horse farm that is due to be sold next month.

The fire started around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday on Quail Hill Road near Business 377. Firefighters from Whitesboro and Collinsville found a field in flames, and about five acres burned before they were able to put it out.

Grayson County Fire Marshal Kevin Walton says that it appears the wind picked up embers from a two-week old burn pile, and the fire touched off when they landed in the dry grass nearby.

"It looks like it's out on top, and it's just ash a lot of times underneath, the coals stay," says Walton. "They were out here today doing some clean-up and stuff and probably stirred it up a little bit."

After 37 years at the ranch, the owner plans to sell the property to the highest bidder in three weeks.
