Southmayd Voting on Beer and Wine Sales - - No One Gets You Closer

Southmayd Voting on Beer and Wine Sales

SOUTHMAYD, TX---One Texas town will have one extra issue on their ballot Tuesday. Voters in Southmayd will be deciding whether to allow beer and wine sales in the city.

The vote stems from a petition signed by 81 residents. Supporters say they don't want to travel outside the city to buy beer and wine.

"It will keep them from having to drive too far to get to get a drink. They can get it right here at this store instead of having to drive all the say into Sherman for this. I think it's a good thing. I think people need to vote it in," Southmayd resident Joe Harper said.

"When you can go right down the road and get it in two or three miles, it doesn't make any sense not to sell it," said Southmayd resident Matt Smith.

"Stop & Shop" initiated the petition. Currently it is the only store in Southmayd that would sell alcohol. If the vote passes, they plan to apply for a permit. The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission says this process takes between 45 and 60 days.
