Sherman Church Holds Coat Giveaway

SHERMAN, TX -- A cold turn in the weather made it a perfect day for a coat giveaway held by members of a church that has been inundated with visitors looking for free clothing.

Volunteer Angela Austin says it was something she heard while planning her wedding that led her to a new pastime running the church's Clothing Closet. "The preacher had mentioned to us that he'd like to start a clothing ministry, so I looked at my husband and he looked at me and we came back from our honeymoon and we started it," Austin says.

On a chilly Saturday, Austin and other volunteers at Trinity Baptist Church on Loy Lake Road were busy giving away winter coats and other clothes to those in need.

"Everyone is welcome to come once a month and get what they need for each person and we've had a real good turnout on it," says volunteer Lola Bell.

"I think it's nice, I think it's good for the community and people who need stuff," says Kelly Calton, who picked up some clothes for her niece.

Volunteers say this ministry is only about eight months old, but during that time it has grown significantly, and they say they have been surprised by the amount of need they have seen for these free clothes.

"It just seems like it's getting larger and larger and pretty soon I think we're going to be out of space here!" says Bell.

Austin says that since she started this project, she and other church members have given clothes to help over 300 families, and that their busiest time was during back-to-school.

"It's overwhelming, the amount of people in this economy right now they're in dire straits, they're just not able to provide for their families so they're not able to buy clothes," Austin says. "Just in the month of August, we helped over 150 families."

"I think it's a blessing, it's a real blessing to the community," says Sherman resident Kristy Scroggins.
