Colbert community helps teen battle leukemia

COLBERT, OK - When the doctor said leukemia, his life completely changed. Now sixteen year old Leo Hernandez, has gone from classes and homework to doctors office's and testing, but the community of Colbert, Oklahoma says they're prepared to help Leo win this fight.

"It hurts inside to everybody," said student, Trevor Cole.

Students at Colbert High School are feeling a big loss in these hallways.

"Knowing that he's the type of kid that's going to walk down the hall and bring light through it, it's devastating knowing that something so horrible can happen to a kid like Leo," Cole said.

Trevor Cole says Leo Hernandez is more than just a fellow student, he's a friend, so when he heard the news, he was heartbroken.

"Well at first, he seemed to be sick for a week and we just figured, virus or something," said Leo's sister, Selina.

But after being sick for about a week, a doctor told sixteen year old Leo Hernandez he had something much worse.

"When I got the call from my mom, she had told me and it's just like my world just collapsed, because he is my little brother so, it's hard." said Selina.

Leo has leukemia, and while family and friends try to cope with the reality, they're reminded of the joy he brings to everyone around him.

"He always makes you smile, that's just the type of person he is, he always has a smile on his face and whenever you have a bad day he always makes it better," said classmate, Amanda McEachern.

"I hope that he fights through it and survives this terrible thing," classmate, Bailee Weger, said.

And since Leo is known for supporting all the school athletes by cheering them on and filming the games, the community is rallying to let him know he's not alone in this fight.

"I'm hoping he can come back to school, see his friends, just enjoy his life the way he should." Selina said.

There are several events coming up to raise money for Leo, including a showing of his favorite movie at the Rialto in Denison tomorrow night. For more information visit the link below.
