GRAYSON COUNTY, TX -- A high flying national championship has brought world class competitors to Grayson County. Loud roaring noises were heard for miles in Sunday afternoon.
"These are speciality built performance aircraft designed for not necessarily stunt flying, but for a very precise form of motor sport. We are trying to fly perfect figures," says Aaron McCartan, contest director.
Every year the National Aerobatic Championship attracts hundreds of pilots to our area.
"The National Aerobatic Championship have been held here at the North Texas Regional Airport since the mid 1970's," says McCartan.
This year's competition, there's more on the line. The best of the best will selected to compete in the World Aerobatic Championship that will also be held at the Grayson County's airport in October of 2013.
"We can send a maximum of ten pilots, no more than six of a single gender to represent the United States," says McCartan.
It's a huge deal for the county and the airport.
"This will be the first time since 2003 that the United States has held a world championship event," says McCartan.
Top competitor Michael Racy is hoping to qualify for one of those coveted spots.
"It takes flying well, the stars aligning," says Racy.
But with so many superior pilots showcasing their talent, this competition is steep.
"One mistake and your out," says Racy.
Luckily for Racy, he's a veteran and knows exactly what the judges are looking for.
"I've been on the last four unlimited teams and hope to be on again this year," says Racy.
It's going to be an exciting week of flying and you're invited to watch.
Event organizers say Friday will be the best day for spectators to enjoy the competition. At 10:00 am a free style event will be held at the airport. Competitors have four minutes to show you what their planes can do.
