VAN ALSTYNE, TX -- The Van AlstyneHigh School brought students together Wednesday to teach a lesson that most don't think about. The dangers of texting and driving
"It really hit home with me today this reality of texting and driving..."
The "it can wait" movement focuses on educating the public, especially teens about the dangers of texting and driving.
"I think with the relevancy of what this is with every kid here that has texted and drove, or been in a car, I think they see the impact that those things can have on them."
During the assembly. students learned about the dangers of distracted driving, and saw first hand the results of a mistake. Because of the distractions of a cell phone.
"You see teenagers texting and driving... And that's something that pretty much everybody with a car is guilty of and you can see what will possibly happen when you do text and drive in just a matter of seconds, you can have your life taken away from you."
The Van Alstyne Police Department also talked to students, providing them with statistics of distracted driving, and explained the real dangers of what could happen in just a matter of seconds.
"We have farm to market roads that have no shoulders and just like the film shows, it only takes seconds to take someone's life."
Students took a lifelong pledge not to text and drive, and a banner-- with that pledge and student signatures will be hung in the school. The banner pledges that students wont get behind the wheel and text.
"A lot of us... Teenagers in this day and age, we're all guilty of it. I mean there's no one that says they haven't been on the phone. And really, before this, you don't think about the things that could happen and how fast everything happens."
"When you see it, those are real stories of real people, that really had their lives taken from them. So you see what can happen. It makes you not want to do it anymore."
