Parents Furthering Education with Free Courses

GRAYSON COUNTY, TX -- Kids are back in school giving parents the perfect opportunity to further their education.

Accomplishing your education and career goals just got a little easier.

"I'm getting my GED to further my career," says Lanora Stegal, adult student.

For six months Stegal has been attending free adult education classes at Grayson College.

"It takes a lot you know, being an adult," says Stegal.

Her daughter gave her the push she needed to hit the books again.

"My daughter graduated, she's 19. She graduated a year or so ago. She's really smart and just seeing her do that, makes mom say, hey, you go on and get graduated too," says Stegal.

Dozens of other Grayson County residents are also taking advantage of the courses through Adult Education Centers of North Texas.

"We can help people learn to read, help them get a GED, help them learn to speak English," says Donna Byrum, Director of Adult Education.

The program is housed at Grayson College, but serves four counties; Hunt, Fannin, Cooke and Grayson. There are also multiple sites through out the counties that hold classes.

"We really like to help students upgrade their skills so that they can get a promotion or get a better job," says Byrum.

You can pick your hours and go at your own pace. Instructors just ask that you make a commitment to accomplish a goal.

"I had a couple students come in. They worked for a long time, but they graduated and their taking courses here at the college," says Lee Yeagers, adult education instructor.

Getting to class is easy too. Byrum says TAPS will drive you to class for free, plus select locations have free child care, taking away all the excuses you can come up with for not jumping on this opportunity to improve you life.

"My goals are to get my GED, go into something like nursing, possibly pharmacy tech," says Stegal.
