Mosquito Traps Full In Grayson County

DENISON, TX -- Mosquito traps set out last night came back teeming with mosquitoes on Friday.

Eight traps were set in Sherman, Whitesboro, and Denison at the homes of Grayson County's human West Nile patients on Thursday night.

The trapper working for the Health Department says the mosquitoes are attracted by a three-day-old mix of grass clippings and water, then a small fan brings them into the trap.

But not all mosquitoes carry West Nile virus. Instead they'll be looking under the microscope for just one type.

"The kulex is easy to find," says Van Ulrich, who is trapping mosquitoes for the county. "It has a blunt, rounded end to it. The abdomen is round. All the others are pointed, so it's easy to get the kulex out and that's the most important one since it's the one that carries the west nile."

Once they sort them under the microscope and find a lab to send the mosquitoes, they should have the results by mid-September, Health Department sanitarian Amanda Cortez said.
