SHERMAN, TX -- Grayson County commissioners were trying to figure out what to do with a building that has asbestos and other problems yet is of historical value to the Sherman community.

The county was given the old Sherman ISD building, which used to be the Sherman High School at one point, about 2 years ago.

Commissioners had hoped to renovate the building for future expansion of the county. However, they found out the building had asbestos and lead paint along with a damaged roof.  All those renovations cost more than they had planned.

Grayson County Judge, Drue Bynum, says it was a hard decision to in fact demolish the building.

"Well you know obviously we've got to balance how much how much money we have to spend versus the right thing to do and of course if you ask different people you may get a different answer. On that, commissioners court this time decided that we just couldn't spend the money to renovate it."

The county is now taking bids for the demolition not only for the old Sherman school building, but also for a house off Cherry Street which used to be the Community Supervision building.
