Severe Weather Week Starts in Texas and Oklahoma

Posted:

TEXOMA -- Both Oklahoma and Texas declared this week as Severe Weather Awareness Week. With severe weather, comes preparation and planning. What are you going to do if a tornado hits?

The best advice when it comes to saving your life during a tornado is to first get as low to the ground as possible. The lowest and smallest room in the center of your house is ideal. You want as many barriers between you and the outside as possible for best protection from flying debris.

Nevertheless the best place, during a tornado, is underground.

Gregg Engle, Manager of Hausner Storm Shelters, explains why having a storm shelter can be so important.

"When the tornado hit in Tushka, we had several people come back here in the office and shared with us that they lost their home their out-buildings, cars, just leveled everything, but they were safe in their storm shelter."

Storm shelters provide the best protection because they are underground where winds and debris can not penetrate. If you think they are really expensive, the shelter may be more affordable than you think.

"The product is pretty affordable, a lot of folks when they hear about our pricing are surprised we do it for that. We actually do local installations here in the Durant area around 20 miles or so beginning at $2,400 plus tax and that's us coming out, digging the hole, setting the unit, and then back filling, breaking it down, trying to make it look good."

The shelters are brought in on trucks and installed in about 2 hours. Last year the Hausner Storm Shelter business installed over 1500 units around the area.

Whether you have a storm shelter or not, its important to have a plan. Always be aware of the local weather around you so you can be  prepared if a tornado were to occur.
