Legislature Kills Drug Prevention Bill

OKLAHOMA --  What starts off as cold medicine, often ends up as methamphedamines. The state of Oklahoma examined a bill aimed at curbing the practice. Psuedoephedrine- the active ingredient in many decongestants- would only be available by prescription. Many in law enforcement back the idea.

But for doctors and pharmacists, the bill wasn't as appealing. The Oklahoma Academy of Family Physicians spoke out against the proposal. One of the groups chairman, Dr. Russell Kohl told the Tulsa World,

But Sgt. Ryan Hunnicutt with the Ardmore Police Department saw a change in meth use and production the first time restrictions were put on pseudo ephedrine.

"Several years ago when they passed the pseudoephedrine law and restricted the use of pseudoephedrine, we saw a big decrease in the number of labs in the area."

And law enforcement can still monitor purchases of the meth ingredient.

"Purchases are monitored on the state level. If we have cause or have a subpoena, we can pull that information, but it is relatively guarded.

With the bill cut on the state senate floor, you can still purchase your decongestants over the counter, but they are still behind the counter
