Counterfeit Bills Leave Trail: Suspect Caught on Camera

Posted:

SHERMAN, TX-- A man wearing a black and orange baseball cap and a gray hoodie walked into the Sherman Exxon station at the corner of highways 75 and 82  and used counterfeit money in December.

"The suspect attempted to pass a counterfeit twenty dollar bill, the clerk recognized that it was a counterfeit and began calling the police department. " Said Sergeant Bruce Dawsey of the Sherman Police Department.

When the suspect saw the clerk calling someone and stalling you can see him getting nervous and then after a few minutes tells the clerk he needs to move his car and bolts out of the store.

"They checked with the Dallas area Secret Service office and they found out that numerous twenty dollar bills with that serial number that had been passed around the Dallas area and McKinney area as well as North Texas and south Oklahoma." Said Sgt. Dawsey.

The gas station clerk recognized the bill by using a counterfeit pen that looks yellow if the bill is real and black-brown if its fake. Although, many stores in the area don't pen check their bills and could have also been victims.

Police say that all these fake twenty dollar bills have the same serial numbers.

" And that's why it's a possibility that it's the same suspect that has passed the other bills or at least the same group of people who counterfeited the same twenty dollar bill. " Said Sgt. Dawsey.

Sherman police say they urge stores and gas stations to pen check their bills twenty dollars and higher, also to look for water marks. Hopefully, Texoma doesn't see more of these fake bills.
