Controversial Political Ad to Air on Super Bowl Sunday

Posted:

NATIONWIDE--This Sunday, Americans will be tuning into the most watched game all year. The Super Bowl will air on KTEN that night, but so will an advertisement that's stirring up controversy. A candidate running for president is using the air time to send a powerful message.

When Americans tune in to the most watched show in the country, a controversial image may appear on the screen.

"There's a shock value," Mary Linder said, Grayson County College professor. "He's trying to get people's attention and evoke a certain feeling and a strong response."

Randall Terry is on the Democratic ballot against President Barack Obama in a handful of states including Oklahoma. This Sunday on NBC, his pro-life campaign Ad is scheduled to air during the Super Bowl. It depicts aborted fetuses and child body parts.

"This commercial is quite controversial. As a result, we want to get the word out to everybody that this spot is going to air in the Super Bowl in the third quarter," Craig Marrs said, KTEN General Manager.

Terry knows his chances for the White House are slim, but it's not stopping him from airing the message.

"The most highly watched show in America is the Super Bowl," Randall Terry said, candidate for president. "This is a part of what gets people's attention and causes them to have a crisis of conscience. That's the mission."

The commercial has thrown the political outlier in the spotlight.

"It is only their bodies that testify to their humanity. They deserve a voice," Terry said.

Due to federal election laws, KTEN cannot deny Randall Terry's message.

"To make sure that we're fair to all candidates running for office, then we need to have that openness available," Linder said.

Several stations in the selected states, including KTEN, have requested for the advertisement to be pulled or censored.

"The video images in this commercial are so graphic and so disturbing that we are just very concerned that people need to be forewarned," Marrs said.

Terry insists what he shows is no different from countless other social movements.

"It will be one of those spots that people will talk about, and it will be one of those spots that many people find objectionable, Marrs said.

Some viewers may be startled Sunday because of the federal election laws.
