DURANT, OK -- Living in Texoma we get our fair share of severe weather, more than most areas in the rest of the united states. One way to help your community and even save lives when severe weather strikes is to be trained as a skywarn spotter.
James dalton, from emergency management in durant, explains why it so important .
"We use our storm spotter training for here we want to know what type of action you need to take, once you've identified it. So you can be as safe as possible."
There are several classes held around the texoma area each month. At a skywarn class you receive valuable severe weather information such as basic weather safety, identifying severe weather features such as cloud formations, and then you learn how to report your storm information.
Weather at the ground is not detected by radar, that is where reports from skywarn spotters are crucial.
Now being a storm spotter is not the same thing as storm chasing. Storm chasers, like KTEN's Kris Hair, travel hundreds of miles a day tracking storms. Dalton says storm spotting is different.
"Storm spotters stay within their region. They'll go to a good vantage point, that we have predetermined. They'll sit and watch the storm, watch the characteristics of the storm."
They then go on to relay their storm reports which help weather warnings be as accurate as possible.
