SHERMAN, TX -- "There's really a definition of what's appropriate for a courtroom," said Grayson County judge Drue Bynum, discussing recent conversation that many people show up for court dressed inappropriately.
The judge also knows "appropriate" can mean different things for different people.
"If that's the only clothes the individual has, then the judge may cut some slack there and say, 'You know what, we're going to allow you into the courtroom,'" the judge acknowledges.
Until Tuesday morning, Grayson County had no dress code. Now, county commissioners have agreed that district judges can ask someone to leave their court based on their clothing.
"We don't have the authority, nor would we want the authority to dictate what goes on in their courtroom, but we do want our colleagues across the street to know we support them in what they do," said Bynum.
You should forget the flip flops and trash the tank tops. It may be 2012, but the county would like to bring back some traditional values.
Judge Bynum said, "I think across society in the past 5, 10, 15 years, what was appropriate then, may not be appropriate now, depending on who you're talking to."
If you're heading for court, it's best to err on the side of caution and go for conservative.
