Crews Clean Up Diesel Spill on Highway 75

HOWE, TX--A slippery situation led to a major slowdown for commuters Wednesday morning. Clean-up crews spent hours mopping up a mess on Highway 75.

According to police, around 6:15 AM an 18-wheeler lost a wheel near the Farmington Road exit south of Howe.

An estimated 50 to 100 gallons of diesel spilled on the highway. For a couple of miles, drivers were directed to frontage roads. Backed up traffic caused a minor collision two and a half miles north of the scene.

"It just lost the wheel," John Cherry said, Howe Police Chief. "The driver did an excellent job keeping it upright. When it went down like that it caught the bottom of the fuel tank and caused it to rupture."

Nobody was seriously injured. TxDOT, Howe Police and Fire and an EPA officer were on the scene for 4 hours. Van Alstyne authorities assisted.

Highway 75 reopened around 10:15 Wednesday morning.
