Crisis Center Sells Shopping Cards

Posted: Updated:

GRAYSON COUNTY, TX -- A Texoma crisis center is starting a new fundraiser, only this program doesn't just benefit them, it benefits shoppers as well. It's called the Shopping Card. Deeda Payton has the details.

It may look like just another flyer or brochure, but it's not. It's a shopping card and 100% of the proceeds benefit local women and children in need. "They are $50 and the full $50 goes to the crisis center," said Carolyn Montgomery, the President of the Women's Gift Exchange.

Montgomery runs the Women's Gift Exchange in Sherman, just one of the 350 Texoma businesses that are selling the discount cards for a cause. "When you get the card you get a booklet that tells you all the shops and they're all over this area from McKinney, Sherman, Denison, Howe, Pottsboro, Bonham all over shops, restaurants, services."

Crisis Center Board Members say they got the idea from a similar program in the DFW Metroplex. "In fact what we're doing is we're trying to copy the partners card in Dallas because they have had such fabulous success. Last year for example, they raised more than one million dollars for the family place which I just think is huge," said Elaine Pendergrass.

The crisis center isn't expecting that kind of cash, but the do have a pretty lofty goal. They're hoping to raise $50,000 which they say is possible if they sell 1,000 shopping cards.

It's money that could change the lives of single mothers and their children. "So that's where the money is going. We are earmarking every dollar to help women and children in crisis," said Pendergrass.

The cards can be used through November seventh.
