Carter County Named Storm Ready by National Weather Service

Posted: Updated:

CARTER COUNTY,OK--Did you know Carter County is one of only twenty-six counties in Oklahoma deemed "Storm Ready?"

That's the word from the National Weather Service

The program was started by the NWS back in 1999 in order to help communities with the communication and safety skills needed to save lives during severe weather.

In order to receive the "Storm Ready" status, communities have to establish a twenty-four hour warning and emergency operations center plus have more than one way to receive severe weather warnings and forecasts to alert the public.

Officials say they're excited to receive the honor.

"Being able to get the information as quickly as, within a matter of seconds of it being posted, that's the big difference between life and death," said Carter County EOC Director Paul Tucker.

Tucker says the process to become storm ready took about two months.
