Church Members Raise Money to Preserve Historical Building

Posted: Updated:

SHERMAN , TX--A group of Texomans is fighting to keep one of the first churches in Sherman standing. They're raising money to preserve history.

Members of Friendship United Methodist Church held a quilt, arts and crafts sale Saturday.

The Texas historical building is 144 years old and in need of repair. They're even selling railroad spikes that once marked graves from the church more than 100 years ago.

"Which is to make sure these beautiful walls that have been standing for over 100 years fighting those tenacious termites stays erect, so we can have an outreach to the community, continue to have open weddings, services during the week and community events," Mitchell Maire, Friendship United Methodist Church member said.

Church members have already applied for a matching grant with Sacred Places.
