CARTER COUNTY,OK--On Friday, officials and citizens of Southern Oklahoma paid tribute to three statesman they call heroes.

People from across Carter County came to dedicate part of Scenic Highway 77 in honor of three county officials who passed away unexpectedly in the last four years.

The names of State Representative Terry Hyman, Sheriff Harvey Burkhardt, and District Attorney Mitch Sperry grace the sign.

Family members spoke about their relatives love for southern Oklahoma and humility the exemplified.

"Even though its been almost five years, the support is just never ending and its just so nice to see it," said Haley Sperry, daughter of the late Mitch Sperry. "What a great honor; Lake Murray was one of his favorite places.

"He would have been proud," said Joyce Kirk, sister of the late Harvey Burkhardt.

"He wouldn't have expected it," added Jesse Kirk, Joyce's husband. "He wasn't in it for the glory any, but yes he'd be very proud."

State Representative Sam Buck presided over the dedication.
