OHP steps up enforcement of school zones

Posted: Updated:

ARDMORE,OK--With kids heading back to school, there are new reminders to pay attention in school zones.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is beefing up special enforcement.

OHP wants drivers to remember the reduced speed limits in school zones and to remember it's for the kids safety.

"What we're doing is we're concentrating on these areas, the school districts that don't have local police departments,"OHP Trooper Jody Cornelison said, "or are not fortunate to have local police departments to patrol the school zones. We will be patrolling the areas before school starts and after school lets out."

Troopers will be out making sure drivers slow down and pay attention to kids in crosswalks in six counties: Johnston, Pontotoc, Carter, Love, Garvin and Murray.

The goal is to increase awareness and safety around schools and buses.
