Grayson County Central Appraisal District Listens to Tax Payers

Posted:

SHERMAN, TX--With property appraisals coming out, many Texomans may wonder where government officials get the numbers from.

The Grayson Central Appraisal District review board held taxpayer protest hearings Thursday for residents who wanted to contest the value of their property.

Many home and business owners say that their property is being over-appraised, but the board insists that they are simply following Texas Property Tax Code.

"We cannot go on hearsay or what some real estate agent says--prices are dropping--or a newspaper article," Jimmy Lightfoot said, Appraisal Board Volunteer. "It has to be tangible, physical evidence that will be retained in the file for future use in case there's lawsuits down the road."

Officials say it is best to bring photos and documentation to a hearing if a citizen wants to contest the value of their property. Also, citizens can hire a private appraiser to reassess the value of their property.
