Denison goes forward with new library, museum project

Posted:

The city of Denison put ink to paper Monday night, making official the plans to build a new library and museum on the grounds of the old Denison High School, torn down years ago leaving behind a large vacant lot on Main Street.

We first told you last month about closed-door meetings between the city and the Lacey J. And Dorothy Harber Foundation where the groups produced a memorandum of understanding, allowing the process of the city's new library construction to begin.

City officials, at Monday night's council meeting, came from executive session to shed light on the near $10-million project, which would fill the vacated lot on Denison's Main Street with the learning center and museum complex.

Under the agreement, the city would maintain the library and the grounds while the foundation will take care of the construction and maintaining the museum.

Once details are hammered out, city officials say construction could begin late this year.
