Blood Donations Needed

Posted: Updated:

ARDMORE, OK- Oklahomans, listen up! The blood supply for the state of Oklahoma is getting low. It's crucial to get that supply up. It's the difference between life and death.  Meredith Saldana has more on this story.

State wide, Oklahoma transfuses about 800 units a day.

The Southern Oklahoma Blood Institute says they need donors to help them keep up with the demand.

Last week, they experienced a blood shortage, they were down to less than a one day supply.

Thanks to local donors, the supply has come up a bit, but the need for blood is still there.

The Ardmore area alone requires about 70-units per day.

Susan Crews says they need you to donate.

"Our blood inventories are up, but they are still not where we feel comfortable. We want donors still coming in donating blood and just giving the gift of life," says Crews.

Crews says if they don't have donors donating on a routine basis, then surgeries have to be canceled and trauma victims won't receive the blood they need to save their lives, because blood isn't on the shelf readily available to them.

If you're healthy, eligible to donate and 17-years of age or older, they're asking that you help by stopping by to donate.

Remember south of the Red River, the Texoma Regional Blood Center always needs your help as well.

They're located on the Texoma Parkway in Sherman.
