Okla. legislative committee clears tornado shelter measure

Posted: Updated:

OKLAHOMA CITY - Legislation to require the owners of mobile home parks to have a plan for protecting tenants and evacuating homes in case of a tornado is on its way to the state House floor.

The bill was approved by the House Economic Development and Financial Services Committee on Wednesday, the first anniversary of a deadly tornado in Lone Grove in southern Oklahoma.

Rep. Patrick Ownbey of Ardmore says his bill is a response to the tragedy. The tornado touched down on Feb. 10, 2009 and ripped through homes and businesses. Eight people were killed and dozens more injured. 4 of those killed lived in mobile homes.

The measure requires that the shelter and evacuation plan be developed with the help of the city or town where the mobile home park is located.
