Sherman Police Join CrimeReports.com

SHERMAN, TX--  Sherman residents now have a new way to check crime stats in their neighborhood. It's part of the services offered by crimereports.com, an online program that Sherman police are now participating in thanks to some grant money. Deeda Payton reports.

It's just one more way technology can keep us more informed about criminal activity in our own backyard. Monday, the Sherman Police Department announced their participation and that the online service will be free for local residents.

Crimereports.com was launched back in 2007 as a tool for law enforcement agencies, but today it is allowing local police to communicate directly with its residents about crime alerts in their city.

Sherman police recently joined the site which costs about $1200 a year using grant money. Crimereports.com pinpoints criminal activity using Google maps. All you have to do is click on your state and city or type in an address, and various crimes will pop up. You can even narrow down the types of crimes you want to check for in your neighborhood. For example, if you are just interested in seeing if your area is prone to theft or burglaries, this web site will do that for you. "It's a good knowledge tool to help you make an informed decision about where you want to live and what's going on in your neighborhood," said Capt. Otis Henry of the Sherman Police Department.

You can also search for registered sex offenders in a specific radius, and the results will even show the sex offenders picture, crime and information at the click of a mouse. All of the information on crimereports.com updates every 24 hours, too.

Once again, crimereports.com is a free online service for participating cities. There is even an app for the iPhone you can sign up for, or you can become a member and get crime alerts direct to your email address.
