Durant Surgeon Treats Patients in Haiti

DURANT, OK -- Relief is coming slowly. Many American doctors coughing up their own money to fly south and help those in need including one Texoma doctor. Deeda Payton spoke to the wife of a local surgeon who is in Port-au-Prince now.

Dr. Peter Hedberg and his wife, Leslie, treat patients in Durant. But, Leslie says the moment her husband heard about the earthquake, he was on the phone trying to get over there to help.

It's been one week since a 7.0 earthquake shook the island nation of Haiti. Today tens of thousands of people are dead, many of their bodies are still stacked up in the streets. And, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of people have broken bones, fractures now a week old.

It's this need for doctors that motivated one of our local surgeons, Dr. Peter Hedberg, to book a flight to Haiti. "He's a great surgeon. He needs to go where people need him."

His wife, Leslie, is running their practice in Durant while he is away. Her only communication with him is over the Internet through Facebook. Monday, he sent her a message saying "I have seen notices that additional physicians are not advised to come; nothing could be farther from the truth. There is still much to do and so little expertise and supplies."

"He did bring some surgical instruments however they have no numbing medicine or anesthesia to help with fractures, most people have fractures." Her husband plans to stay in Haiti for seven days. He left Saturday with as many supplies as he could carry."Once he got into the Dominican Republic the U.S. Air force was able to helicopter to Haiti."

In the Facebook message, he also said he is now in a rural community using a school classroom as a makeshift operating room saving as many lives as possible with enginuity and care like a group of other surgeons who selflessly traveled to Haiti to make a difference.

We plan on speaking to Dr. Hedberg when he gets back.
