Rash of car burglaries in Durant could be solved

Durant police have cleared up the case of car thefts from a Durant garage on New Year's Day. Lt. Carrie Wyrick with Durant PD explained that a Nissan Altima was stolen from a business in the 900 block of Mississippi and on January 6th, the owner of the car said a credit card stolen from that vehicle had been used five different times in Mead.

The next day, police checked out surveillance video from that gas station, and there was the suspect wearing a white leather Sooners jacket. Another day later, a man matching the description was spotted at another business on main in Durant.

He was arrested shortly after and police found a camera on him that was stolen from another business. Lt. Wyrick said the man, Billy Wayne Engles, admitted to having the Nissan and told where it was. He was booked into the Bryan County Jail for burglary in the second degree, possession of a controlled substance, and unauthorized use of a vehicle, among other charges.

The Nissan was returned to its owner and the investigation continues.
