Preparations for Winter Travel

GRAYSON CO., TX -- Winter driving conditions are expected across parts of Texoma.  And now is the time to prepare.  KTEN's Chris Severy reports.

Of particular concern are people heading north, especially into southern and central Oklahoma.   Snow is expected in Oklahoma and in some places could get quite heavy.  That means if you are headed that direction, you need to prepare now for winter driving conditions.  Texas DPS Trooper Lonny Haschel says, "make sure that you do those things that we talked about.  Slow down a little bit.  Make sure you're watching the car in front of you.  Leave plenty of space.  Make sure your windshield wipers are in good condition and washer fluid is filled.  And if worse thing comes to worse thing make sure your cell phone battery is charged, because if you end up sliding off into a ditch you can dial 911 and get some help."  It's essential that you pack an emergency it in your car.  You'll want to have things like blankets, jumper cables, a shovel, extra clothes, water and non-perishable food.  Snow chains are also a good idea to have just in case, again, especially if you area headed north, where the snow could get quite heavy.
