Holiday Bike Giveaway in Madill

Posted:

MADILL, OK---In the spirit of the holiday season, one local charity is giving away bicycles so that children across Texoma can have a good Christmas. The Northeast Texas Bicycle Association held a giveaway Saturday in Madill. The organization gave away a few dozen bicycles in the hopes that local families who can't afford Christmas gifts this year will have something to put under the tree.

The Northeast Texas Bicycle Association set up one hundred bikes to giveaway today at the Madill Fire Department on North Second Street. Folks at the organization actually collect used and broken bicycles and spend their own money and time repairing them to giveaway. They say it's the smiles on the children's faces that have kept them going year after year.

"The idea is not only just Christmas, but the idea is the child of today is the man and woman of tomorrow and what they're going to be they're now becoming and it's up to people like us to try and see if we can't put that smile on a child's face," says the director Mike Connors.

The organization has been around for more than twelve years. The organizer Mike Connors says he's given away more than 5,400 bikes over the years but this year alone has been his biggest year giving away 1,300 bikes in total.

Right now, the organization holds these giveaways every few months in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. Connors says he's hoping to expand and is currently planning another giveaway in Arkansas next year.
