Plainview Bond Issue To Go Before Voters in 2010

Posted:

ARDMORE, OK--Schools in Texoma are among those just trying to figure out how to make ends meet. Just this week, officials with the Plainview School district approved a plan for a new bond issue to go to voters in March. It's a bond issue totaling almost $1 million but school officials say it would provide upgrades and repairs to ensure the safety and security of students and the good news---it won't raise taxes for folks in the district.

It won't raise taxes because older bonds approved by the district years ago will no longer be on the bill. Now, if the bond were to pass, the money would allow for new tile floors in both the high school and intermediate school something that's been a safety concern for students for months now. Some of the funding would also be used to upgrade new technology including computers and software.

"With the state cutting back our funding in our general budgets, it will be very difficult for us to maintain what we have," says Plainview Superintendent Julie Altom.

"Traditionally Plainview has been very supportive of bond issues and of course the budget crunch will hit us as well and this will be a way to help provide services and facilities and items for our students that we can't do without the bond," says Plainview Elementary Principal Lisa Moore.

Some of the bond money will also go towards new air conditioning units because the superintendent says many of the units are about 20 years old, meaning they needed to be replaced five years ago in order to prevent carbon monoxide leaks.

The bond election is set for march second of next year and the issue needs a majority vote of at least 60 percent to pass.
