Need for Urgent Care in Ardmore Finally Met

For years residents in the Ardmore area, who had after hours medical emergencies, had no choice but to go to the hospital and wait to be seen in the emergency room.  But now there's another option, urgent care.  KTEN's Meredith Saldana reports.

Up until a few weeks ago the closest urgent care was about 60 miles away.

But on November 16th, two after hour medical facilities opened in Ardmore.

You may have seen the new Ardmore Urgent Care on Rockford Road just south of 12 street.

Marketing Director Dawn McGuire says the new medical facility has been in the works for about two years.

They realized there was a need for quick care and the only option after normal business hours was to go to the ER.

Until now.

McGuire says, "If it's, you know, a non life threatening emergency they just walk in.  They are able to see a doctor, immediately get a prescription if necessary and go on with their business. Get back to work.  If it's a child, get their child back to school."

With children being out of school on the weekends many parents found themselves in local emergency rooms for minor injuries that required a quick x-ray, stitches or even just a doctor's opinion.

"They (accidents) do happen on the weekend and you know babies always get sick at 5 o'clock on Friday!  So that's another reason we have the extended hours.  And you know as a mom, it's comforting, it's nice to know that some place nice like this exists."

And on the same day last month, Mercy Memorial Hospital opened "Mercy After Hours" at the Wellness Center.

They, too, are open 7 days a week and say they opened in response to consumers needs for better access to health care with longer hours.
