Durant Ice Rink Brings Money to Local Businesses

Posted:

It's time for the Fourth Annual Downtown Holiday in Durant and this year they are bringing back the portable ice skating rink.

Durant Main Street says the ice rink was such a hit, bringing 5,779 skaters, they will be doing it again.  The rink opened Friday, December 5th and will be open through January 5th of 2010.

This is the second year Durant is making the portable ice rink a part of their downtown holiday.  The has proven to be an assent to Durant bringing in money to the local businesses.
Donna Dow, Program Manager for Main Street Durant says, "It created a lot of traffic for our retailers and people bought when they came, they didn't just browse."

This year retailers are preparing for the extra business boost by offering customers special discounts, hoping to draw more people into their stores and restaurants.

This year, Durant Main Street hopes the rink will draw in even more people than last year.  If you plan on skating you can bring your own skates, if you do not own a pair they are renting ice skates and they even provide socks if you forget your own.

The rink is open on the weekdays from 4pm-10pm and 10am-10pm on the weekends.  If you want to skate, it costs $7 ($5 for use of the rink and $2 for skate rental).  Officials say group rates are available and businesses and organizations are encouraged to schedule their Christmas parties to include the rink.
