Aubrey Loses Volleyball Finals


SAN MARCOS, Texas (AP) - Poth won its seventh state Class 2A volleyball championship by sweeping Aubrey 25-8, 25-23, 25-12 in UIL state tournament.

Championship match MVP Tara Dunn led the Pirettes Saturday (38-10) with 12 kills, nine digs and two aces. Poth was making its eleventh state tournament appearance Saturday, having won three championships in a row, twice, in 1995, 1996 and again in 1997.

They repeated in 2004, 2005 and 2006. The Pirettes feature 13 underclassmen including Dunn, a 6-2 junior outside hitter. Senior Bethany Friesenhahn had ten kills while sophomore Jordan Kotara added eight kills for Poth.

Jessica Dzuik (17) and Kara Lucherk (16) combined for 33 assists while Heather Orth and Dunn had two aces each. Dunn led the defense with nine digs while Lucherk and Friesenhahn and seven digs each.

Jac Bullock led Aubrey (37-10) with nine kills while Cadyrose Phillips and Jennifer Robbins had four kills each. Kelsey Lynn had 20 assists for the Chaps.
