ADA - The East Central University women's basketball team was picked sixth while the Tiger men were selected seventh as the Lone Star Conference preseason basketball polls were announced Tuesday by the LSC office in Richardson, Texas.
The Lady Tigers, of head coach Kent Franz, were picked ahead of seventh-place Southwestern Oklahoma State and eighth-place Cameron.
Central Oklahoma was picked to repeat as LSC North champion after capturing the division crowns in 2008 and 2009. The Bronchos received 17 first-place votes and 164 total points while Southeastern Oklahoma State, with two first-place votes, received 138 points for second place. Northeastern State, also with two first-place votes, was tabbed third with 125 points.
Texas A&M-Commerce was picked fourth with 100 points, followed by Texas Woman's (97), ECU (56), SWOSU (40) and Cameron (36).
Voting in the preseason polls were the coaches, sports information directors and various media members.
Southeastern Oklahoma State's Destiny Brown was chosen as LSC North Preseason Player of the Year.
On the men's side, coach Terry Shannon's Tigers, with only three returning players and two starters, were picked last in the LSC North with 32 points.
UCO, with 18 first-place votes and 138 points, was picked first while Texas A&M-Commerce, with two first-place votes and 113 points, was selected second.
Cameron, coached by former Tiger assistant Wade Alexander, was voted third with 81 points, followed by Southwestern Oklahoma State (80), Northeastern State (79), Southeastern Oklahoma State (37) and ECU.
Former ECU player Justin Wilkerson, who recently transferred to Texas A&M-Commerce, was chosen as LSC North Preseason Player of the Year after averaging 11.2 points and 9.8 rebounds for the Tigers in 2008-09.
