Free Mammogram's Today

Posted:

As the economy struggles and healthcare costs grow local groups are picking up the costs.      The Susan G. Komen foundation has been working non-stop to make sure woman across the country get the care they need.

The foundation has been an inspiration and a blessing to women all across the nation and back in June the organization gave our Grayson County residents an opportunity to take advantage of free mammogram screenings.  Now, if you missed your chance this summer, the breast cancer foundation is teaming up with the Grayson County Health Department again to provide more free tests.

The free screenings are for Grayson County women who are un-insured or under insured.      When the doors opened at 9 a.m. around 20 people were waiting in the lobby.  When you arrive, there is an informational session including a video with testimonials from woman affected by the disease and a segment that teaches you how to properly perform a self breast examination.

After the session, you will receive a voucher which you can redeem at Wilson N Jones at your convience.  These free screenings are extremely valuable for many women in our area.  Amanda Ortez with the Grayson County Health Department says, "A lot of people if they do not have access to primary health care this is an opportunity to make sure they still get the care they deserve."

Attending free screenings can save you hundreds of dollars.  Mammogram's can cost anywhere from $50 to $150.  Doctors say age is the most important risk factor when it comes to breast cancer.  They also say, woman who are 40 or older should get a mammogram every 1 or 2 years.  Current studies say over 13% of women, that's one in eight women, will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives.

The first session ended at 11 am this morning, but if you missed it there is another opportunity this afternoon from 1 until 3 p.m.
