SHERMAN, TX -- Texas lawmakers just passed a law to protection citizens privacy in an accident.

As it stands, if someone is in an accident their public records are put into a public database for anyone to access that information.

District 26 Representative, Larry Phillips says the concern is that other third parties, such as attorneys, telemarketers, or even a chiropractor can get this information and contact those involved in an accident.

"Especially  when you have a significant fatal accident or major trauma. The last thing you want is to have a lot of people calling you saying please use our services and invading your privacy becaue they have all the information you have," Phillips said.

The new law will eliminate this concern, and instead protect certain private information such as a person's name, address, phone number, the date of the accident, and even insurance company information.

The bill is in effect immediately starting Sept. 1st. As of now, there is no word yet as what will happen to the public records already in the database.
