Complaint Settled Against Bryan County Sheriff Bill Sturch

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Justice Department has agreed to settle its complaint alleging Bryan County Sheriff Bill Sturch discriminated against pregnant employees.

Sturch had been accused of forcing pregnant employees to be switched onto administrative duty and requiring them to receive a doctor's note stating that they were able to continue in their jobs.

Under terms of a consent decree, the sheriff must post an anti-discrimination policy and have all employees sign a form stating that they received a copy. Struch must also arrange for
training to let employees know their rights.

The consent decree notes that Sturch denied discriminating against his employees, but agreed to the settlement to avoid a long court fight.

The settlement is subject to approval in federal court in Muskogee.
