Salvation Army Opens "Family Store" in Sherman

From Press Release:

The Salvation Army of Grayson County is pleased to announce the Grand Opening of its new and improved Family Store in Sherman at 426 W. Houston St.

We will be holding a Grand Opening Ceremony at the new store on Tuesday, June 2nd at 11:30 am. There will be a "cutting of the ribbon" involving community leaders to include City Mayors and the County Judge.

During our country’s economic recession it is an important time to come together in support for those among us who are in need, and The Salvation Army Family Store has been assisting our local community for more then 50 years.

In all the years the Army has operated it’s store formally known as the Thrift Store it has never owned the store property and always had to pay rent. The new location was purchased in December and the Army has a mortgage note but is optimistic for paying it off early with the support of the Community. The Store is already paying less for its mortgage then it was paying in rent.

Unlike many other second hand stores the Army has a fulltime Social Worker who writes clothing and furniture vouchers giving away the donated goods to those in need. The store must sell enough merchandise to pay its bills and if possible help the other ministry programs that serve the community, such as its Homeless Shelter, and Boys and Girls Club. Captain Grigsbay said that at retail prices the store gives away more than $100,000 of merchandise annually. The Captain also stated that, "one of our greatest programs is the back to school program, where our store provides children in need clothes for school."

So with its new and convenient downtown location the Army is extremely grateful to be able to provide an attractive, well stocked Family Store with affordable prices for the citizens of the community and all of Grayson County.

The Grand Opening will include The Salvation Army Canteen set up and providing refreshments. The Public is invited to attend this special occasion for the Salvation Army and for the Community of Grayson County.
