In Oklahoma City a new bill intended to help victims of domestic violence is being proposed. Legislators want to put guns in the hands of victims. KTEN's Meredith Saldana reports.
Oklahoma currently ranks 10th nationally in the number of women murdered as a result of domestic violence.
Just over a week ago a young mother and her 4 children were murdered in their El Reno, Oklahoma apartment by the mothers ex-boyfriend.
Another tragic result of domestic violence.
Senate President Pro Tem Glenn Coffee is currently sponsoring a bill to allow those victims, men or women, who get an emergency victim protection order to also get an emergency license to carry a concealed weapon.
I sat down with Carter County Undersheriff Milton Anthony who says they receive domestic violence calls pretty often.
He says he doesn't believe every domestic case should qualify for the emergency licence to carry a weapon but says if done on a case by case basis it could protect victims of severe domestic abuse.
Anthony says they see domestic abuse on every level.
"It varies. We've seen all kinds from a bruised lip to getting hit in the head with a gun, beat with a gun, you know it, - - they come in all the time depending on how a victim is abused."
The Ardmore Family Shelter couldn't comment on their stance just yet.
They are a part of the domestic violence coalition and will have a summit on February 12th in Oklahoma City to decide where they stand on the issue.
