On Friday, a campaign cracking down on drunk driving begins. It runs through Labor Day, two weeks later, which is also one of the deadliest times of the year on roadways.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, about 15 officers from Southeastern Oklahoma will be training for advanced roadside impaired driving enforcement, also known as A-RIDE.
The training not only polishes their skills on how to spot a drunk driver, it teaches them how to identify someone who has been impaired by drugs.
Lieutenant Dave Houser with the Durant Police Department is one of the instructors. He says the class, "Allows officers to detect alcohol impaired drivers as well, but also drug impaired drivers, which with the amount of illicit drugs, and drivers under the influence of prescription drugs, we're seeing a growing problem with drugged drivers as well as alcohol impaired drivers."
The campaign "Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest." begins August 15th and runs through Labor Day weekend.
In Texas, certain districts have the option of the state slogan "Drink. Drive. Go to Jail," or the national slogan "Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest."
Officers say they'll be setting up random checkpoint to catch impaired drivers.
