Groundbreaking for New Durant Hotel - - No One Gets You Closer

Groundbreaking for New Durant Hotel

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday morning, to break ground on a new 98 suite hotel in Durant, that's been in the works for three years.  KTEN's Kristi Branam has the story.

Most hotels in Durant are at full capacity on Friday and Saturday evening.  And, there has been so much business growth in the city, the hotels are starting to max out during the week as well.

Tommy Kramer, Executive Director of the Durant Industrial Authority says they've been evaluating the need for a new hotel for three years, and the Holiday Inn Express Hotel and Suites is the perfect fit.  The hotel will be upscale and mid-priced.  It will also be four stories tall, a type of hotel durant hasn't seen, in almost 80 years.

Tommy Kramer said, "We're excited.  We have not had a new four story hotel built in Durant, since Hotel Bryan in 1928.   So, 80 years ago was the last new construction of a 4-story hotel.   So, this is exciting."

The company building the hotel, Premier Hospitality Management is one of the biggest employers in Durant.  Currently, the company owns 13 hotels, and is building two new ones, including the Holiday Inn.  The new hotel will bring 25 new jobs to the Durant area.

The hotel is scheduled to open in spring 2008, just in time for the start of tourist season.
