BIG 12 MEDIA DAYS

Baylor has different take defending Big 12 title

DALLAS (AP) - Coach Art Briles and Baylor arrived at Big 12 football media days as defending champions for the first time.

Briles says 2013 is gone forever, and there's no defending a championship that can never be taken away from the Bears. He says his team learned how to win at the highest level and will attack 2014 like every other team and try to win another one.

Even with quarterback Bryce Petty and receiver Antwan Goodley back, Baylor is picked second this year behind favored Oklahoma.

Kansas coach Charlie Weis, with only four wins his first two seasons, said Monday that expectations are clearly defined for his team. But he isn't saying publicly what they are.

BIG 12-BOWLSBY

Big 12 commish's dire warning about pending change

DALLAS (AP) - Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby warns that anyone who likes intercollegiate athletics the way they are now will hate what's coming.

During his opening address at Big 12 football media days Monday, Bowlsby said significant changes are on the way.

Bowlsby isn't sure people understand how much pending lawsuits against the NCAA and its member schools could change things. He says the Big 12 and other conferences are defendants in seven class-action lawsuits "and that number is growing all the time."

Bowlsby believes new funding challenges, including legal battles and expenses increasing at a higher rate than revenue, will eventually result in the elimination of some minor sports teams. The former Stanford athletic director also anticipates tension among sports on campus and among institutions with different resources.

ROGERS STATE-RECRUITING CLASS

Rogers State coach signs 6 in recruiting class

CLAREMORE, Okla. (AP) - Rogers State University women's basketball coach Bobby Cope has announced the six players who make up his first recruiting class heading into the 2014-15 season.

Jordan Evans, from Tulsa; Amari Jones, also from Tulsa; Jalissa Felici, from Bellevue, Nebraska; and Taylor Koelsch, from Owasso; all join the Hillcats as transfers. Kelsy Byrd, from Ketchum and Madison Dearmin, from Balko, come to RSU from the high school ranks.

The Hillcats are entering their second year in the Heartland Conference, beginning their second year in the NCAA's Division II membership process.

RANGERS-YANKEES

Mikolas pitches Rangers past sloppy Yankees 4-2

NEW YORK (AP) - Miles Mikolas earned his first win as a starter, pitching into the eighth inning Monday night and leading the Texas Rangers to a 4-2 victory over the sloppy New York Yankees.

Trailing by a run with none on and two outs in the sixth, Texas got run-scoring singles from Geovany Soto, Rougned Odor and Shin-Soo Choo to go ahead in only its third win in 17 July games.

Adrian Beltre drove in the Rangers' first run with a fielder's choice in the third inning on one of New York's five errors - three by starting pitcher Shane Greene (2-1).

Second baseman Brian Roberts and shortstop Derek Jeter made the other errors for the Yankees, who had not committed five in a nine-inning game since Aug. 20, 1998, against Minnesota.
