Whitewright Couple Loses House to Fire

WHITEWRIGHT, TX -- An elderly Whitewright couple lose their home to a fire. Deeda Payton spoke to the fire chief about the blaze.

The couple is being assisted by the Red Cross. Firefighters say their home is a total loss.

The fire broke out about 6:30 Friday night at a mobile home in the 1000 block of SH160 just south of Fiddler Road. This video is courtesy of The Whitewright Rose. An elderly couple and their two dogs made it out before crews arrived. Four area departments responded.

The firefighters struggled to battle the fire and say they couldn't seem to get the upper hand. "They went in to try to attack it and as the wind got into it, it just got out of hand and we backed out and went defensive and just tried to make sure nothing else got burned."

Today, flames are still visible and what's left continues to smoke. Firefighters say a wood burning stove inside the home started the fire.

No one was injured in the fire, however, the elderly man was treated on scene for smoke inhalation.
