WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma evoked the "I Love Lucy" show in a quip responding to Sonia Sotomayor's scenario about what he might do if she - hypothetically, of course - attacked him.
"You'll have a lot of 'splainin' to do," Coburn said as the crowd laughed.
What he said - and how he said it - was a riff on Hispanic television character Ricky Ricardo who was played by Cuban bandleader Desi Arnaz.
Those who know Coburn say he often speaks like thus - but some were not pleased.
Yvette Melendez of Glastonbury, Conn., was attending the hearing and says she doesn't think the comment was appropriate although she says she's sure Coburn meant it as a joke.
