Agencies seek to destroy tons of records

Associated Press - May 30, 2009 11:45 PM ET

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - State agencies in Oklahoma sought to destroy nearly 1,600 tons of paper records during fiscal year 2007.

The Oklahoma Department of Libraries says records are destroyed only after their historical, administrative, legal or fiscal value has been evaluated.

Individual state agencies handle destruction of their records, often using outside vendors.

Workers at Northern Oklahoma Resource Center of Enid destroy about 40 tons of paper each month for the Department of Human Services.

Many agencies are working to reduce their reliance on forms and paperwork by turning to the Internet. The state's Go Green Oklahoma initiative has saved more than 36 million sheets of paper since January 2007 with more Web-based programs.

DHS spokeswoman Mary Leaver said the agency is doing whatever it can to change its paper-based system, but it's a slow process.
