Tulsa leaders fight for post office

Associated Press - April 25, 2009 11:45 AM ET

TULSA, Okla. (AP) - Elected officials in Tulsa are hoping to convince the U.S. Postal Service not to close a post office in a depressed area.

The postal service plans to close its office in the Kendall-Whittier area east of downtown on Friday and consolidate it with the downtown post office.

Rep. Jabar Shumate of Tulsa says as long as there are days to fight, officials will continue to fight for the post office.

Shumate says closing the post office would hurt a rebuilding effort that has brought stores and families back to the neighborhood that had gained a bad reputation.
